The Story
Five professional artists sharing the Farmer Street Studio space, each creating unique artworks, conversations about art and life over coffee and meal breaks, collaborating on studio exhibitions and projects. With the freedom to also build their individual creative practices outside the group. A collaborative studio model that has been going for nearly thirty years in Perth, Western Australia.
In addition to the five core artists, round 100 recreational and emerging artists attending the weekly classes offered in the studio space. A blended, welcoming space such as this fosters the creation and sharing of art and art related activities. Read the 2023 Newsletter
The studio has a long and rich history across three sites with many artist members. All up over 34 artists have shared the studio space over the last 30 years.
The studio started in 1994 in Wellman Street, Perth, moved to Robertson Park in 2000, and then to the current North Perth space in 2023. Each time the studio changed its name to reflect with the name of the landlord or location.

Select Plumbing Studio become the Wellman Street Studio when the Select Plumbing sold the building to Kakulas Brothers (In 2023 the building burnt to the ground due to a fire in their industrial kitchen).
When that studio lost the space to make way for food storage in late 1999, the Hyde Park Precinct Group and then the Mayor of Vincent helped the five artists find the second studio space in an old hall in Robertson Park, Perth. With the encouragement and approval of the City of Vincent staff and Councillors, the five artists and their students moved into the Robertson Park Artists Studio.
Read the rich history of the old studio here. With no funds available for a major renovation of the deteriorating building, the City of Vincent staff, Mayor and Councillors suggested and then supported the artists move to the rennovated North Perth space, which had been lying empty for more than two years.
The studio has always been a cooperative supportive space, welcoming to other artists, adult students and anyone interested in art. Dr Maria Miranda, an expert on artist studios, described the studio in detail here. Art expert reviews of the studio are also here, here, here and here.
